BASC Puja 2007 Cultural Program Highlights

Amit Kumar

Amit Kumar's name needs no introduction. A child prodigy, he was singing and acting in his father's films while kids his age were still sucking thumbs! He cut his teeth watching the antics of his hugely successful comedian father, the one and only Kishore Kumar. Acting in his father's films and singing along with him on stage, has given Amit a confidence found in few of his peers.

Amit has done concerts in every part of the world singing his own hits along with hits of his father. Not just in the Hindi film industry, but even in the Bengali film industry. Amit Kumar is a name to reckon with. He has gigantic hits to his credit. His non-filmi albums like 'Mad' have shown that he is an ace composer and an innovative singer just like his father. Truely, a chip of the old block!

Rupankar Bagchi

He has the wonderful gift from God - his music, his voice ! He has the intensity to explode - on stage! He has the power that rushes your adrenaline - through the various numbers he delivers. He is the versatile singer of the day - Rupankar. Rupankar Bagchi.

"Music flows in my blood", Rupankar reminisces " From my childhood, I learnt classical vocal from my father Sj. Ritendra Nath Bagchi and at the same time, Rabindra Sangeet from my mother Smt. Sumitra Bagchi." "Soon I was ready for formal training from my Guru Sj. Sukumar Mitra in Classical Music and from Sj. Jatileswar Mukhopadhyay in Modern Songs ." " My first stage performance was at the age of eleven, with my mother beside me." And thus the journey began through the rough water.

Today he is in the limelight - all over the media. It is like a voyage through the ocean of music which has engulfed his days and nights. Now the music studio is his home - the musicians are his family members. To meet the rising demand, he needs to record every hour - for albums, title music of serials or films, advertising jingles. During the nights he is on the move from one town to another to perform on-stage for his innumerable fans. At times he is even at TV Channel studios - either for performance or for anchoring. Today Rupankar is the heart-throb of the young and loved by all.

Shantanu Bhattacharyya

A notable young classical vocalist from Kolkata Shantanu Bhattacharya is known as doyen of the Patiala gharana gayaki and for his excellent performances in India and abroad. He believes that the raga-music has the innate power of taking the listeners to the higher realms of psychic consciousness. He tries to focus on this aspect in his performance too.

Initiated into classical music by his mother, Shantanu was groomed in Patiala gayaki by the stalwarts of this style like Pandit Prasoon Banarji, Meera Banerji and Pandit Ajoy Chakravorty. As a scholar of the I.T.C. Sangeet Research Academy (S.R.A.), Kolkata, his association with great maestros exposed him to the best in other styles as well. This has enriched his singing, which is focused centrally on the gayaki of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Patiala Gharana.

Aa(N)dhaar Raaneer Deshey - Drama by students of Pathsala Bengali School
In the "Alor Desh" (land of light), people are happy. They are always singing and dancing. They often have festivals for no reason at all ("Akaaron Utsab"). They also talk in “chhando” (rhymes).

In the "Aa(N)dhaar Raaneer Desh" (Dark Queen's land), there is no laughter, no song and no rhyme. The Dark Queen rules with an iron fist. All violators of her rules are punished and thrown into the dungeon.

The drama takes you from the land of light to the land of darkness where three brave fighters challenge the Dark Queen. They are helped by an wise old lady who shows them how a sweet princess turned into the Dark Queen. She also tells them how to conquer the Dark Queen - not by killing but by bringing out the "light" that lives deep inside.

Written and directed by Soumya Mukherjee. Direction assistance by Pratik Deb, Soumitra Guha, Pallab Haldar, Subhra Banerjee and Anasua Kushari. Dance choreography by Samita (Mimi) Sarkar.
